Game Art & Design - Bachelor of Science Degree
 
The Art Institute of California - Orange County's bachelor's program in Game Art & Design offers a broad range of work-ready design and technology competencies focused on career paths in the specialty of game art.  Students will acquire a combination of skills in drawing, perspective, 2-D design, and animation. They will study lighting and scene setup, color theory, anatomy and gesture, as well as explore motion maps, characters, level design, and rototyping.  Students also will develop skills in scriptwriting, storyboarding, character animation, programming, networking, and Web-based game content production. In this program, students will learn the importance of creating portfolios and reels that reflect their knowledge of the game industry.
 
General Description and Program Objective
The Art Institute of California - Orange County offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Game Art & Design.  The degree program lasts four academic years and contains 192 quarter credits, including 56 credits in general education.  Seventy-five (75) percent of the 192 quarter credits (or 144 quarter credits) may be satisfied through transfer credit.  Each course within the program is worth two to four quarter credits and the program consists of approximately 60 courses.  The objective of the program is to help the student attain an understanding of game content creation, communicate a game's premise and design satisfying puzzles out of the experience of the game. The game designer lays out the choices and options with an underlying purpose or story in mind.  Entry-level positions appropriate for graduates of Game Art & Design include texture artist, character animator, modeler, and level designer.
 
Method of Instruction
Instructional methods at The Art Institute include lecture, demonstrations, labs, one-on-one tutorial, and periodic examinations.  Except for internships and field trips, all instruction is conducted in a classroom setting.
 
Graduation Requirements
To receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Game Art & Design, students must complete a minimum of 192 quarter credits with 56 credits in general education courses and 136 in the specialty area with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.  Also, a student must receive a passing grade or credit for all required course work, meet portfolio or other requirements outlined in the student handbook, and satisfy all financial obligations to The Art Institute.
